COVID-19 Updates

    CEO Coronavirus Update – April 12, 2022

Are we done yet? There’s no question that most of us are behaving as if the pandemic has run its course. Emotionally, we’re certainly finished with it. Two years is more than long enough, in our minds, to fight a virus. As I was watching the Masters golf tournament this weekend, I was astonished to see no masks (OK, maybe 2) worn by spectators crowded into the stands. Yes, they were outdoors, but they were in very close proximity, as were those in the stands at the NCAA basketball championship games held during the past few weeks. We’re done. But are we?

    CEO Coronavirus Update – March 15, 2022

The pandemic news continues to be encouraging, with the number of cases, hospitalizations, and deaths all declining. Nationally, new cases are at about 35,000 per day, (down from a peak of 800,000 per day) and the number of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 has decreased by 75%. We’re not out of the woods yet, but there is certainly a great deal of hope on the horizon (especially with the official arrival of spring next week, which brings more options to socialize outdoors rather than inside).

    CEO Coronavirus Update – January 11, 2022

Many of us think of a new year as a new beginning – an opportunity to wipe the slate clean and to start fresh. As we bid farewell (not a fond one) to 2021, we’d optimistically (and, yes, naively) hoped that 2022 would be better and that we could put COVID in the rear-view mirror. I continue to be optimistic that 2022 WILL be a better year in terms of the pandemic. I have been told that I am someone who looks at the glass as being half full rather than half empty, but I really do think that things will improve by springtime. Here’s what we have going for us, in the fight against COVID.

    CEO Coronavirus Update – December 14, 2021

I don’t think any of us here in Vermont ever expected that we would become a COVID-19 hot spot in the U.S., nor that we would remain in this status for so many weeks. I remember back in the spring of 2020, when we reacted with alarm that the number of new cases in the state was exceeding 100 per day. Here we are, 18 months later, with new case counts as high as 740 per day in Vermont. Why is our rate of infection so high?

    CEO Coronavirus Update – November 16, 2021

Vermont has been receiving a great deal of attention in the news these days, and not just because of Patrick Lahey’s announcement that he won’t be running for the Senate in 2022. There have been shifts regarding COVID-19 case rates, exposure / quarantining / testing standards, and treatment, so this seems like a good time to review the current COVID-19 situation in Vermont, and to put things into perspective.

COVID-19: Unfortunately, the number of COVID-19 cases in Vermont continues to increase rather than decrease because of the Delta variant. In Windham County, 170 new cases of COVID-19 have been […]

    CEO Coronavirus Update – May 19, 2021

Finally, the good news we all need: after a difficult year, it appears that the U.S. pandemic may be turning a corner. Below are six reports with statistics that show that progress is being made against COVID-19.

    CEO Coronavirus Update – April 13, 2021

As I reflect back on what was happening at this time last year, I am incredulous at the progress we’ve made in the battle against COVID-19. We first learned of the virus in China in December 2019, it came to the U.S. in January 2020, and by mid-March 2020, the world was shutting down in an effort to quell transmission of the virus. A year ago, none of us had any idea what lay in store, and the prevailing mood was fear and uncertainty. Now, just 13 months later, almost 20% of the U.S. population has been fully vaccinated with Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, or Johnson & Johnson vaccines.

    CEO Coronavirus Update – March 16, 2021

Although springtime is slow to arrive in Vermont, as always, there is a definite spring in our steps here at Grace Cottage as we continue to vaccinate 350-400 people per week in our COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic (also known as the Community Wellness Building, which continues to be an appropriate name for the building’s current use).
