Happy Spring!
I often say that being the CEO of Grace Cottage is a gift and, honestly, a joy. We have the best patients and staff I have ever experienced. Keeping our mission “top of mind” is paramount during this tumultuous time. Here at Grace Cottage, we are doing what we do best: staying focused on delivering excellent, compassionate care to our patients.
As statewide hospital expenses remain under scrutiny, I want to assure you that Grace Cottage continues to work to be as lean, efficient, and productive as possible. We have made great strides in finding more efficient ways to deliver care and to improve patient access. We are very proud to have eliminated travel nursing contracts in the past year, eliminating this high-cost staffing. We have also reduced our administrative expenses, and starting this summer, we will be part of the New England Collaborative, a group-purchasing affiliation with some of our Vermont hospital colleagues that will help us realize further savings.
What has not changed at Grace Cottage is our culture of caring. We continue to make patient care our highest priority. Thank you for your continued support of Grace Cottage Hospital. It means the world to us.
16th Annual Spring Into Health 5K
Despite the weather, our 16th Annual Spring Into Health 5K was a great success!
Of the 93 registrants for the event, 15 were children under 18 years of age, and two of those kids won the awards for the fastest male and female: Max Albin (20:30) and Kalia Webb (22:24). Christine Tattersall won the prize for the most experienced runner. Congratulations to them, and to all who participated.

16th Annual Tee It Up For Health Golf Benefit
We have room for another team or two and/or a few volunteers at the 16th Annual Tee It Up for Health Golf Benefit on Saturday, June 7, 2025, at Haystack Golf Club. This important annual favorite will raise funds for a much-needed new primary care clinic building on our campus. Golfers often comment that this is their favorite tournament. Volunteers are needed to run some of our fun contests around the course. Lunch and dinner provided.
Click here to register online – registration includes greens fees, a cart, golf balls, a box lunch, snacks, a logo gift, and an awards dinner.
What You Need to Know About Ticks
Ticks seem worse than ever this year! Take precautions to avoid ticks whenever possible. If you are bitten, remove the tick immediately and call your primary care provider for preventive measures, like an antibiotic. Most tick bites do not require an Emergency Room visit, but it’s wise to consult your provider if you experience a sudden high fever, muscle and joint pain, and flu-like symptoms. To learn more, read provider Phil Schafer’s Graceful Health article in Saturday’s Brattleboro Reformer.
The 75th Annual Hospital Fair Day
Save the date for the 75th Annual Hospital Fair Day on August 2, 2025, on the Townshend Common. Visit gracecottage.org/events for more information, including how you can donate (Donations will be welcome in June and July.) and/or get involved.
We hope to see you at the Fair!
Snuggles and Support
On May 3, Big Picture Farm in Townshend hosted an open farm event fundraiser for Grace Cottage. The friendliest baby goats, kittens, sheepdogs, chickens, and mama goats welcomed guests. We are grateful for the fun and the generosity of the Farrell family!
For National Nurses’ Week, our nurses hosted a fundraiser for the Windham County Humane Society. The nurses donated supplies for the WCHS and met kittens and a sweet pup, all available for adoption.
We received this warm note on a whiteboard from departing patients Laury Greener and Donna Macomber from Brattleboro.
I hope you can get outside between the raindrops and enjoy all the greenery!
With thanks and gratitude,
Olivia Sweetnam, CEO
