Starting October 10th, Grace Cottage Family Health & Hospital will host a weekly support group for people suffering from Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS.) The group will meet on Wednesdays from 4:00-5:00, from October 10 – November 14, or as long as there is sufficient interest.
The RLS Foundation estimates that the lives of more than 11 million people in the United States are significantly affected by this incurable neurological disease. People with this condition have uncomfortable sensations in their legs and an irresistible urge to walk, move or massage their legs in order to relieve the sensations. The condition can range from mild to intolerable. Because the effects of the disease are worse at times of rest, RLS can cause significant sleep disruption, furthering the negative impact on one’s life.
Sue Tweedy of Townshend will facilitate the new support group. She has been afflicted by RLS since 2005. She has received medical attention for the condition and has done much personal research on the disease. While on the RLS Foundation website, Sue learned how support groups can help those who suffer from RLS and discovered there are no such groups listed on the website in Vermont. Since, she has followed the RLS guidelines and has had her application to become a group leader approved.
The group is a confidential space where participants can share information, personal strategies, and coping mechanism; and also lend support and receive comfort. People should not expect medical advice. All who have the condition and their loved ones are welcome.
Group meetings will be held at the Grace Cottage Community Wellness Center at 133 Grafton Road (Route 35) in Townshend. While there is no need to register, if you are interested in participating (whether or not you can attend), please contact Sue at susantweedy90@gmail.com or at 802-221-0498.
