We are excited to announce that our emergency department has received two major recognitions from the American Heart Association!

Get With The Guidelines® – Stroke Rural Recognition Bronze Award, which recognizes hospitals that work to improve stroke care and address healthcare disparities in rural communities. The Bronze Award represents the highest recognition level available to Grace Cottage during its initial participation in the program.

According to the American Heart Association, residents of rural areas are 40% more likely to develop heart disease and face a 30% higher risk of dying from a stroke. This recognition reflects our efforts to provide top-quality stroke care and reduce those risks for patients in the communities we serve.

In addition to its stroke-care recognition, Grace Cottage Hospital achieved Silver Status in the American Heart Association’s STEMI Achievement Award Program. The designation acknowledges the emergency department’s success in delivering timely and effective treatment for patients experiencing ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), the most severe and potentially fatal type of heart attack.

“These recognitions mean a great deal to me because they represent the dedication, teamwork, and commitment our Emergency Department brings to every patient, every day,” said Keanna Cook, Grace Cottage’s Emergency Nursing Director. “In a rural hospital, minutes matter during a stroke or heart attack, and our team works tirelessly to ensure patients receive the highest standard of care from the moment they arrive. I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished together, which reflects our promise to our community that they can trust us to provide exceptional emergency care when they need it most.”

After years of planning and dreaming, our new Primary Care Clinic Building is closer than ever to becoming a reality. Thanks to the generosity of our community, we have already raised 73% of the funds needed and are on track to break ground in June 2027.

This transformative project was launched with a generous challenge pledge from Joe and Terry Pollio of Grafton. Their commitment inspired others to invest in the future of healthcare at Grace Cottage.

“We want Grace Cottage to be the best it can be,” the Pollios said. “We hope this new clinic will ensure top-quality medical care for everyone in this area for generations to come.”

The need has never been greater. Grace Cottage’s award-winning primary care practice continues to attract new patients, with hundreds currently on our waiting list. Yet our existing facility simply cannot keep pace with the growing demand. Every available space, from closets and porches to small alcoves, has been repurposed into workspaces. Originally two homes in the 1840s, the current clinic now strains to accommodate 28,000 to 30,000 patient visits each year.

A new clinic building will provide the space, efficiency, and modern infrastructure needed to serve more patients while supporting the exceptional care our providers deliver every day.

Thanks to gorgeous weather, generous and enthusiastic fairgoers, and many volunteers, the 76^th Annual Grace Cottage Hospital Fair Day was a great success!

On Saturday, August 1, 2026, well over a thousand community members and visitors gathered on the Townshend Common to enjoy delicious food, bid on auction items, shop for household goods, books, and plants, listen to live music, try their luck in the raffle, show off their face paint, ride ponies, and “fish” at the Fishpond Booth, all to raise crucial funds for our Critical Access Hospital and Rural Health Clinic.

About $50,000 was raised, which, after expenses, will go toward construction of the new primary care clinic building.

Generous community support keeps our small, independent rural hospital and clinic thriving. Grace Cottage is grateful to everyone who helped make Hospital Fair Day such a success, particularly Hospital Fair Day Co-Chairs Connie Holt and Helen Holt, whose tireless dedication and hard work make Fair Day possible.

Grace Cottage is proud to provide high-quality emergency care to our community 24 hours a day, seven days a week. As mentioned above, our Emergency Department has recently been recognized by the American Heart Association for the quality of our heart attack and stroke care and was voted the area’s Best Emergency Department by Brattleboro Reformer readers for the eighth consecutive year.

As you may have read recently in news reports, we were disappointed to learn that Dartmouth Health will be discontinuing its TeleED program, which we have used since 2022. We value Dartmouth Health as a partner and have greatly appreciated working with the TeleED team. However, the discontinuation of this service does not change Grace Cottage’s ability to provide excellent emergency care to our patients.

TeleED is a supplemental resource that gives our Emergency Department team rapid access to an additional nurse or physician for consultation in situations when another set of eyes or ears can be helpful. Our Emergency Department continues to be staffed by the same experienced Grace Cottage advanced practice providers, nurses, and other clinical professionals who care for our patients every day.

Grace Cottage is already exploring replacement tele-emergency services and is in discussions with several potential partners, including the organization that has been providing Dartmouth’s overnight and weekend TeleED coverage and with whom our clinical team already has an established working relationship. Dartmouth’s TeleED service will remain available to Grace Cottage through the end of December, providing ample time to evaluate our options and ensure a smooth transition.

While we are disappointed to see the Dartmouth TeleED program end, our community should be confident that this change does not diminish the emergency care available at Grace Cottage. We have an exceptional team of providers and caregivers, and we remain fully committed to providing excellent, compassionate emergency care to our community 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
